"Roleplaying" signifies embodying your character as if they were a genuine inhabitant of Tolkien's world, complete with a life story, understandable motivations, and realistic interactions with others and the environment. It's about more than just accumulating "points" and "levels."

Our top management strongly supports and encourages roleplay, although it's not mandatory. Commands that facilitate roleplaying include:

change description: Allows you to describe your physical appearance, shaping others' perceptions

of you.

change whois: Customizes what others see when they type whois <your name> — your

reputation and recent exploits may be included.

In various libraries, you'll find books on roleplaying. While we don't enforce roleplay, we reserve the right to incentivize it through coded features. For instance, elves (or others from the West) who harm peaceful inhabitants may face alignment consequences, and defenders of good may react harshly.

Additionally, characters must operate independently (e.g., no sharing equipment or planning ambushes together) — see the relevant RULE headings (e.g., rules character separation).

We encourage players who enjoy roleplaying to gather for shared enjoyment. Feel free to use the idea command to propose ways in which management can further support your roleplaying experience.

What is MUME?

MUME, Multi-Users in Middle-earth, is a multiplayer text-based online game based upon J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth during the epic wars of the late Third Age between the forces of the Dark Lord and the armies of the Free peoples. MUME is completely at no cost and has been continuously running, expanded, and remastered by a community of volunteers since 1991.
