HALFLINGS, HOBBITS, PERIANNATH

Hobbits are a small folk, being about half the size of a man. They have leathery and furry feet resulting in most never wearing shoes. They are known as Halflings by the Humans, and the Periannath by the Elves.

They fear other races, treating them with superstition. However, they are a very-strong willed people, who when forced to fight can do so with vigour. It was recorded how the Shire Hobbits managed to defend their home from an Orcish attack many years ago.

Although rare, certain Hobbits are prone to adventures and this lead to success when Thorin II and his party took to taking a Hobbit to reclaim their lost home.

There are only two known places where Hobbits are known to live, those being the original settlement of Bree and the Shire. The origin of Hobbits is uncertain, though it's known that they existed long before coming to their current main home in the Shire.

MUME's Hobbits

Hobbits within MUME are in most respect identical to Tolkien's descriptions. They are, for obvious reasons, found in places other than the Shire and Bree.

Hobbits in MUME are treated differently from the other races:

They make ideal thieves with their quick reflexes and light bodies.
They are able to move and sneak better when barefoot.
Their furry feet with leathery soles provide some basic protection.
They are able to enter tiny holes that other races cannot fit into.
They suffer penalties when riding large mounts, and prefer ponies.

What is MUME?

MUME, Multi-Users in Middle-earth, is a multiplayer text-based online game based upon J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth during the epic wars of the late Third Age between the forces of the Dark Lord and the armies of the Free peoples. MUME is completely at no cost and has been continuously running, expanded, and remastered by a community of volunteers since 1991.
